basics of design: subway tile

Sometimes the most basic things are the most important things. One of my most basic go-tos is subway tile. While it might not sound exciting, these rectangular tiles make a big impact. And I love that I can adapt these tiles to any space or look. There is certainly a place for some fancy shapes and materials; hexagons, squares, and more. But more times than not, I think subway tile is the right choice. And since we know subway tile has been used for decades, it seems to be timeless. The simple lines provide the perfect backdrop in kitchens & bathrooms alike.

When I have my choice, I prefer a hand formed subway tile in a white crackle glaze -- matte in the bathroom & shiny in the kitchen. BUT the great thing about subway tile is that even if your wallet is a little tighter, you can still get a great look. Places like Home Depot have great options that can be used for a great end product. Another game changer is the grout color. Darker grout has a more dramatic effect and I think it sets a more contemporary mood. Whereas as a lighter, neutral grout has a clean, simple effect.
